This position is based outside of San Francisco in Belmont, CA.
Directs and coordinates research and development activities including product design and development of a novel fluid-filled accommodating intraocular lens technology.
Provides primary technical direction to projects of high technical complexity requiring application of advanced medical development knowledge.
Formulates strategy and execute development plan by integrating multi-disciplinary technical knowledge including materials science, optical engineering, and mechanical design and manufacturing process engineering.
Directs and functionally manage activities of a cross-functional team of design and product development engineers in a supervisory capacity.
Participate on project core teams as a technical leader responsible for leading a multi-disciplinary product development team from initial concepts stage through release. Key responsibilities include:
Development of design requirements and specifications
Initial prototype feasibility testing
Development of manufacturing process and documentation
Develop new testing methodologies and testing fixtures for system evaluation
Verification and validation testing
Uses deep technical/scientific knowledge to advise and develop strategies, which significantly contribute to organizational objectives.
Oversee outside vendors and consultants as required. Represent the organization as primary internal and customer scientific/technical contact as required on contracts or operations. Conducts briefings and technical meetings for internal and external representatives including equivalent and above management.
Responsible for formulating and implementing product development strategy within the project. Liaises with other areas of the business providing senior input and advice to global projects. Provides leadership direction, determining and developing approach to solutions by coordinating multiple resources to solve complex problems.
Develop concepts and propose approach, to address identified ophthalmic medical device/science/technology needs.
Assure continuity of products and processes assessment feasibility, research, design, development, compliance to customer and non-customer requirements, transfer to production.
Lead design reviews, assign and review action items or delegate these tasks.
Ensure regulatory / statutory / legislative compliance for all project work.
Act as a mentor in the engineering organization, may direct the activities of senior technical professionals to accomplish objectives.
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Design engineering, Biomedical engineering or related discipline or equivalent years of directly related experience; Master’s and PhD’s preferred.
10 Years of experience developing mechanical devices in the medical industry or similar products.
Direct experience in developing ophthalmic class III implantable products is preferred.
6 Years of demonstrated leadership to manage technically complex projects
Work experience contributing to the formation of novel design concepts for new product research and/or development. Has proven ability to develop/implement advanced processes, techniques related to product development and/or critical systems.
Seasoned project management skills; multiple projects of complexity and/or large scale nature.
Organizational management of multiple disciplines in a technical capacity.
Experience in pilot engineering.
Interactions with senior personnel on complex or significant technical matters, often requiring coordination across organizational lines.
Proven leadership track record of results.
Capability to motivate complex teams cross-functionally; directs strategic and business goals.
Known authority among peers in ophthalmic surgical device/science/technology industry, applying advanced principles, theories and concepts.
Expert knowledge of ISO, ANSI, FDA, MDD and regulations applicable to the design and development of medical device/science/technology.
